Arts Centre Hastings-2008

The Arts Centre Hastings performing arts building was designed by Chris Magwood and Ingrid Cryns and built by students at Fleming College’s sustainable building program in 2008.

Located in downtown Madoc, Ontario, this building created an indoor and outdoor venue for performing arts in a family park complex that includes a skate park, splash pad and canteen. A living roof covers an outdoor stage that can play to crowds of 300 or more, and the octagonal interior is an 80-seat theatre space. The building was the recipient of the Award of Excellence from the Consulting Engineers of Ontario for its innovative sustainable components (engineering by Blackwell-Bowick Partnership).

Explore the slide show to find out about the building’s earthbag and hempcrete foundations, round straw bale columns, grid-tied photovoltaics, ground source heat pump, non-toxic finishes and much more…
