Lots of people live in and love old houses. These buildings were designed to last for hundreds of years with periodic maintenance. Learn about what brick and stone structures require to keep them standing and functioning well for another century.
This course will provide a brief overview of traditional building technology, and how masonry materials work together to provide protection from our harsh weather. We’ll discuss where and how and why masonry systems can fail. Also we’ll cover the basics of mortar analysis and matching historic mortar.
The hands-on component of the workshop will examine the process of re-pointing, and give participants experience in using the tools and mixes required to do re-pointing work.
